Net metering is a term applicable for On-Grid solar systems. Net metering allows us to feed excess energy produced by our solar system to the grid. This system credits solar system owners for the excess energy produced by their solar panels or we need to pay only for the energy that we use beyond what our solar panels can generate.

• On-Grid
  On-Grid solar power plant is also known as grid-connect solar, grid-tie solar and grid-feed solar. This solar system is connected to the grid and has no batteries. On-grid solar system with batteries also available, which is commonly known as Hybrid solar systems. In this system excess energy (when solar panels produce energy more than current consumption) is exported to the grid. It will take energy from the grid at any point if solar panels are not generating energy as much as required.
• Off-Grid
  Off-Grid solar power plant is not connected to grids as the name indicates. It is also known as standalone power system. It generates energy through solar panels and uses it to charge solar battery. It is then converted using an inverter so that it can power home or business appliances.
• Hybrid (On-Grid with Batteries)
  Hybrid solar system is a combination of On-Grid and Off-Grid solar systems. It has battery backup to store power generated from the solar panels. Once the batteries are full, it will feed surplus electricity into the grid.

The system will provide you power if the battery bank is installed. So basically the system will store the power generated during day time in batteries.

The amount of power generated by a solar power plant is dependent on sunlight. As a result solar panels will produce less energy during cloudy weather conditions.

There are different kinds of batteries available in the market to provide power backup to your home. It includes Lead Acid Batteries, Lithium Batteries, NiCad Batteries, NiFe Batteries etc. Lead Acid and Lithium Iron are the most commonly used ones.

Lead Acid Batteries

Lead Acid Batteries are using to provide backup power to vehicles, buildings etc. from quite a long time. These batteries comes in affordable pricing when compared to Lithium-ion batteries, so it is very commonly used. These batteries are quite bulky and its life span ranges from 5 to 10 years depends on full charge and discharge cycle.

Lithium-ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries provides high density of energy when compared to Lead Acid Batteries, means more energy per unit of space. These batteries are costly when compared to Lead Acid Batteries. The market of Lithium-ion batteries are increasing day by day and the prices are reducing. These batteries have higher life time (approx. 10 years) and they have the ability to charge and discharge more frequently. Due to these reasons Lithium-ion batteries offer lower life time cost when compared Lead Acid Batteries.

Yes, solar power is much cheaper than grid power. Usually grid power tariff keeps increasing every year while solar is a one time investment. Once installed solar power plants will give you energy for next 25 years with little maintenance.

Cost of a solar will vary depending on the type, power requirements, battery backup etc. The tentative cost of a solar power plant without batter backup will range form Rs. 50 to 65 per watt. While with batter backup it will cost around Rs. 120 to 140 per watt.

The energy of solar radiation will vary depending on time of year, time of day, coordinates etc. And it also depends on below factors.

• Amount of dirt or water vapor in solar panels.
• Amount of Sun light (will be less during cloudy weather).
• Shadow or shade on solar panels
• Quality of solar panels.

So make sure that your solar panels are clean and no shadow is falling on it to generate more power.
